In an attempt to find a new and exciting way to take myself out the gene pool, I've bought a skimboard. This isn't as daft an idea as you may think, as and ex skateboarder and snowboarder, it's just an aquatic progression. I'm thinking Troon, or the quieter end of Ayr beach should be cool for this. (Or even Girvan given that it's not the tourist mecca it once was)
For those who don't know what skimboarding is, check out this video.

Before you get in the water stick 'Weil's disease' in your search engine. It's a nasty condition that's caused by exposure to rat urine. (There's a lot of that in our rivers and coastal water). Surfers and kayakers tend to get it. It can be treated if it's properly diagnosed, but GPs don't always know enough to diagnose it correctly so it's just as well to know about it.
Ach, years of keeping rats, and especially being territorially marked by the males, I reckon I'm either immune, or I've already got it.
